SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) or the more modern TLS encrypts data transmission between the browser and the website. This can be recognized by “https://” in the address bar and the padlock icon.
Websites without SSL are marked as “not secure” by Google—which deters visitors and lowers their search rankings. Today, most web hosts provide SSL certificates for free through Let’s Encrypt.
