SEO – Search Engine Optimization

« Back to Glossary Index

SEO, short for Search Engine Optimisation, refers to the process of optimising a website for search engines. It encompasses all measures designed to ensure that web pages are more easily found, understood and ranked in the organic – that is, unpaid – results on Google and other search engines.

The field can be broadly divided into four areas:

  1. Technical SEO lays the foundations: a clean page structure, fast loading times, good mobile responsiveness, crawlable content and structured data. Find out more on my SEO page.
  2. On-page optimisation focuses on content, search intent, relevant keywords, a logical heading structure and internal linking.
  3. Off-page SEO, on the other hand, focuses primarily on external links and a domain’s reputation.
  4. If you operate regionally, you can’t really do without local SEO – for example, through a well-maintained Google Business Profile and content with a clear local focus.

Ultimately, it’s not about attracting as many visitors as possible to a page. It’s about getting the right users to the right place at the right time. That’s why technical quality alone isn’t enough; search engine optimisation only comes into its own when combined with helpful content and a genuine understanding of visitors’ needs.

And there’s one more important thing to bear in mind: you’re never quite finished. Search engines are constantly updating their ranking systems, competitors are catching up, and search behaviour itself is changing. Added to this is the fact that AI-based search systems and answer engines are playing an increasingly significant role. This is precisely why a clearly structured, technically sound and content-wise unambiguous website pays off twice over: it helps not only traditional search engines but also modern AI systems to categorise content correctly.
