The favicon is the small icon that appears in the browser tab, in bookmarks, and on a smartphone’s home screen. Technically, it is an image file (usually 32×32 or 512×512 pixels) located in the website’s root directory. A missing or generic favicon looks unprofessional—it’s the smallest branding element on a website, but often the most visible.
