Above the fold

« Back to Glossary Index

“Above the fold” refers to the visible area of a website that can be seen without scrolling—a term derived from the folded front page of a newspaper, the top half of which is visible in the newspaper stand. This area is the most important part of a website: it determines whether a visitor stays or leaves. The headline, key message, and a clear call to action should therefore always be placed above the fold—on all screen sizes.
