A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect from an old URL to a new one. The HTTP status code 301 signals to search engines that the page has been permanently moved—and in doing so, transfers the accumulated SEO value (known as “link juice”) to the new address. When changing domains or hosting providers, correctly configured 301 redirects are crucial to avoid losing established rankings. If this isn’t done, the page in question may lose all of its rankings and be pushed far down in the search results.
